Lakmal appointed Sri Lanka’s Test vice-captain

Suranga Lakmal has been appointed Sri Lanka cricket team’s new Test vice captain prior to the two-match Test series against Bangladesh. The appointment was ratified by the Minister of Sports Honorable Dayasiri Jayasekara. The minister has also announced 16-man Lankan Test squad for their upcoming away assignment against Bangladesh.

Kusal Mendis has made a comeback in the 16-man squad. He was out of squad in Sri Lanka cricket team’s recently concluded tour of India. He was dropped due to poor form. But all on a sudden, he has been picked for the Bangladesh tour so that he can regain lost confidence.

Apart from Kusal, another cricketer Akila Dananjaya, the 24-year old offspinner, has also earned call-up in the squad.

It is mentioned that the two-match Test series between hosts Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will start from 31 January, following the Tri-nation series, involving hosts Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. The first Test match between these two teams will be played at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on 31 January while the series-decider second Test is slated to played at Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka from 8 February.

Sri Lanka squad: Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Roshen Silva, Rangana Herath, Suranga Lakmal (vice-captain), Dilruwan Perera, Dushmantha Chameera, Lakshan Sandakan, Akila Dananjaya, Lahiru Gamage, Lahiru Kumara.
