The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) received the invitation letter from Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on January 15.
On behalf of SLC, Sri Lankan ODI and T20I captain Angelo Matthews handed over the invitation letter to Bangladesh Test and T20I captain Shakib Al Hasan.
Later during his briefing to the media, Angelo Matthews said, “I can confidently pronounce that the passion for cricket in Sri Lanka, India and Bangladesh will never decline. All these three countries hold equal tradition and standard. Our beliefs, behavior and character are influenced by similar kind of cultural and historical events. In here, people are united under the flag of cricket which is interrelated with our languages, religions, national identity and political influences.”
Shakib Al Hasan, thanking SLC for inviting Bangladesh, said, “It is a great honor for Bangladesh to be invited to play in a big occasion like Sri Lanka’s independence. An Independence Day trophy is something great for any country. We cordially thank SLC for inviting Bangladesh and hope the tournament will be a successful one.”
SLC President Thilanga Sumathipala also expressed his gratitude towards Bangladesh and India and said, “70 years is very long journey for any country. Everybody would wish to make it memorable. We are really pleased to find our closest neighbors in this competition who were more or less involved in our country’s struggle. We believe it will be great cricket.”
