The tri-nation series between Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe will start on 15th January. The hosts Bangladesh and Zimbabwe have already announced their squad. Sri Lanka were the only team team and they have announced it finally on Tuesday.
There was a lot of discussion in the Sri Lankan board regarding whom to chose as the new captain. But in the end its Angelo Mathews again who himself stepped down as captain six months ago. Some reports suggest that it is the new coach Chandika Hathurusingha who convinced Mathews to take the responsibility again.
Mathews said in a press conference on Tuesday: “When I stepped down, I thought that I will never take it up again. SLC President, Head Coach and the selectors wanted me to reconsider my decision.”
He added: “I thought about it and there are few reasons for me to take it again. We need to have stability leading up to the 2019 World Cup which is less than 18 months away. This is an hour of need and if I don’t take it up now, I will feel bad in a few months time.”
