England have rewritten the history as the post 481/6 against Australia in the third ODI at Trent Bridge, the highest total in men’s ODI cricket and the second highest in List A cricket. This is the 19th score of 400-plus in men’s ODIs and third for England.
Australia opted to bowl first in the series-defining ODI after they were defeated in the first two ODIs. Openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow made an excellent start to England’s innings. They put on 159 runs in 19.3 overs. Roy was run out after scoring 82 off 61 with 7 fours and 4 sixes.
Bairstow was joined by Alex Hales. The carnage didn’t stop as they put on 159 runs in at a faster rate. Bairstow brought up his sixth ODI hundred in 69 balls, his fourth in last four innings. He made 139 runs from 92 balls hitting 15 fours and 5 sixes.
Jos Buttler departed scoring 11. Hales reached his sixth century off 62 deliveries, sixth-fastest English ton. He and skipper Eoin Morgan hammered 124 runs together for the fourth-wicket. Morgan raced to a fastest English fifty in 21 balls after becoming England’s leading ODI run-scorer.
Hales top-scored with 147 runs from 92 deliveries including 16 fours and 5 sixes. Morgan made 30-ball 67 hitting 3 fours and 6 sixes. Both were dismissed by Jhye Richardson in the 48th over.
Australia did well to restrict England under 500 as the hosts put on 481/6 in 50 overs.
England broke Sri Lanka’s 443, a ten-year-old record in 2016. They had posted 444/3 against Pakistan on the same ground two years ago. New Zealand women’s 490/4 against Ireland few days ago is still the highest in all ODIs.
481 is the second-highest score in List A cricket after Surrey’s 496/4, which was achieved in 2007. Earlier on Tuesday India A made 458/4 against Leicestershire in Leicester, a score which lasted as second-highest List A total only for few hours.
