This was the first Test in the month of June in India. India elected to bat first as the stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss. Openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay gave a commanding start. The likes of Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman were hit for runs in one-day style.
Dhawan raced to a seventh century in 87 balls before the lunch was taken. He became the sixth overall and first Indian to score a hundred before lunch on day one of a Test match. India went to lunch at 158/0 in 27 overs.
Dhawan was soon caught in the slips off seamer Yamin Ahmadzai, who picked up Afghanistan’s first Test wicket. The southpaw left scoring 96-ball 107 runs hitting 19 fours and 3 sixes.
The rain came at stopped the play after 45.1 overs. The tea was taken by that time. The rain arrived again after 3.3 overs when Vijay was on 99. Vijay got his 12th hundred as the play resumed again. Wafadar got Vijay lbw soon.
KL Rahul was looking good during his 64-ball 54 runs knock. He got dismissed by Ahmadzai just after Vijay’s departure. Afghanistan were slowly coming back in the game.
Rashid, who had an awful start to Test cricket, picked up skipper Rahane’s wicket and troubled the batsmen then on. Mujeeb too struck with the wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara, who also became his first first-class wicket.
Dinesh Karthik came back in India’s Test XI after missing 87 matches, which is a record for India. He was run out for 4 as India lost five wickets for 54 runs. India finished the day with 347 for 6 wickets in 78 overs.
