Aakash Chopra names the players KKR should retain ahead of IPL 2021
Kolkata Knight Riders narrowly missed out on qualifying for the playoffs. They might have finished fifth in the points table this season. They were level on points with Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore. But, they had to finish outside the top four owing to their poor net run rate.
The two-time IPL champions failed to keep an eye on the NRR. It was the biggest mistake they committed this season. They won seven games and lost seven in the league stage. The fact that they lost games by bigger margins reduced their NRR. During the league stages, Dinesh Karthik passed captaincy baton to England’s Eoin Morgan.
Chopra picks players KKR should retain next season
Former Indian opener and cricket expert Aakash Chopra disclosed which players the two-time IPL champions players should retain going forward to the next season. Chopra reckons KKR should retain only three cricketers. The commentator picked the likes of Andre Russell, Varun Chakravarthy, and Shubman Gill as his retention choices.
“I thought a lot and I feel that there are only three players they should be retaining. If they retain any more, they will lose money from the kitty and will not be able to build a good team,” Chopra told in his Facebook video.
The former Indian cricketer also reckons that it is better to retain Andre Russell. The Caribbean might have performed badly this season but he is a terrific T20 material. Chopra feels if KKR release him, then he will be expensive in the next auction. So, the best thing that KKR should do is to retain the West Indies all-rounder.
“The first name is Andre Russell. This year may not have been good but he is a T20 rockstar. If you release him and try to buy him at the auction, he will be very expensive, so it is better to retain him. You also create a relationship with the player and tell him that he is an integral part of the team.”
Varun Chakravarthy was one of the leading wicket-takers in the season. He took as many as 17 wickets in 13 innings. He registered his best bowling figures of 5/20 against Delhi Capitals. Impressed by his bowling, the national selectors picked him for Australia T20I series but was sidelined owing to his shoulder injury.
“The second player I can see is Varun Chakravarthy. He is taking wickets, he is a mystery bowler and is accurate, If he goes into the auction, he will be very expensive, everybody needs a mystery spinner and Varun Chakravarthy is that guy for you.”
“Last but not least, who could actually be their first retention. Name is Shubman Gill,” Chopra said.
