AB de Villiers predicts Ashes’ top run-scorer

The upcoming Ashes series between the battle of titans- England and Australia is just hours away from keeping the fans from the edge of their seats. England will be looking forward to completing a historic double in the wake of their World Cup 2019 success.

AB de Villiers predicts Ashes' top run-scorer
AB predicts Bairstow to be the top run-scorer in upcoming Ashes.

To make things interesting, England knocked Australia out of the World Cup tournament in the semi-finals. So, they will aim to avenge the defeat to England in the iconic Ashes.

Meanwhile, former South Africa batsman AB de Villiers has predicted the top run-scorer during this year’s Ashes series. According to him, England batsman Jonny Bairstow will come out on top scoring the most runs.

Bairstow’s recent match against Ireland in last week’s one-off fixture at Lord’s is a forgettable one as he got out without scoring in both innings. His average is just under 38 runs in Test cricket. However, he can take positives for gaining a rich vein of form during the recently-concluded showpiece event, which England won.

‘The biggest run-scorer, I feel, is going to be Bairstow. He has been in incredible form and I feel he has taken his cricket to the next level,’ De Villiers, who is now playing for Middlesex in the United Kingdom, told the BBC.

‘Both are very talented players, but I don’t feel it will come down to the two of them to decide who is going to win the Ashes series,’ added De Villiers when he spoke about Joe Root and Steve Smith.

‘But both have captaincy experience, are big leaders and are big characters in their respective teams. I feel both teams need the two of them to have a big series. Root, playing at home, will have the slight advantage.’

‘There is nothing better than having the crowd on your case. The only advice I can give to Smith and Warner is to go out there and enjoy it – and enjoy the challenge,’ concluded De Villiers.

The first Test will go all guns blazing at Edgbaston on Thursday.
