AB to lead SA in Boxing Day Test
South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis has been ruled out of the four-day day-night Boxing Day Test against Zimbabwe at St George’s Park, Port Elizabeth. AB de Villiers will lead the Proteas.
du Plessis has been affected by a viral infection after recovering from back and shoulder injuries. He has been declared unavailable just four hours before the start of the play. But he will be available for India series, starting from January 5.
“Faf has been making steady progress from the respective back and shoulder injuries and until last week was on track to make a comeback in this match. He developed a respiratory tract infection which delayed his recovery this week, and subsequently made it difficult for him to make a full recovery in time for the match. He will continue to receive treatment and rehab from our physiotherapist, Craig Govender, and we are hopeful he will recover in time to lead the team for the first Test match against India,” said South Africa’s team manager, Mohammed Moosajee, who is also a medical doctor.
Meanwhile, de Villiers is South Africa’s stand-in captain on his return to Test cricket after nearly two years. He last played a Test in 2016. He handed over Test captaincy to du Plessis last year.
The first four-day Test match between South Africa and Zimbabwe will start at 1:30 pm local time on Tuesday.
