‘Absence of Steyn-Philander won’t give us edge’
South Africa are missing their big guns Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander in the first Test against Bangladesh which begins from September 28 at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom. Bangladesh batsman Imrul Kayes is still aware of Proteas side.
South Africa picked Duanne Olivier, Andile Phehlukwayo and Wayne Parnell ahead of injured Steyn, Philander and Chris Morris for the first Test. The Proteas have Kagiso Rabada and Morne Morkel in the squad who might be threatening for the visitors.
“I don’t think the absence of Steyn and Philander will give us edge. The players who will replace them will obviously be quality players. Otherwise you don’t get chance in South Africa team. You can’t take lightly anyone in international cricket. They have Morne Morkel and Kagiso Rabada and both of them are world-class bowlers,” he said ahead of the series opener.
But still the Tiger opener believes Bangladesh can give challenge to the hosts. According to him, the batsmen need to continue to bat like they did in last two-three years despite the batting line-up is missing Shakib Al Hasan.
“Of course we can give challenge to the opposition. If we execute our plans properly in the middle then definitely we can challenge them. The way our batsmen are batting in the last couple of years in Test cricket, if we maintain that momentum and are able to bat well then we believe we can bring some positive results.”
