Afridi points out what Babar should do to be like Smith-Kohli
Babar Azam is often compared to Virat Kohli. However, Shahid Afridi does not see this Pakistani batsman in the level of Kohli, Joe Root and Steve Smith. The former Pakistan captain thinks that Babar should be a ‘match winner’ before comparing with them.
Babar scored 69 and 5 runs in two innings in the Manchester Test, which Pakistan lost by 3 wickets against England. The 25-year-old has so far scored 1924 runs in 27 Tests at an average of 44.74.
Babar is at number one in the T20 batsmen’s rankings, three in ODIs. His position in Tests is at number six. Afridi has no doubts about Babar’s talent. But he thinks he needs to do better in red ball cricket.
Afridi, who has played more than 500 international matches for Pakistan, expressed his views on Babar the day before the start of the second Pakistan-England Test in Southampton on Thursday.
“He is very talented – the backbone of the team – but needs to score big runs,” Afridi told BBC Sport.
“If Babar wants to become like Root, Kohli, Australia’s Steve Smith or South African AB de Villiers then he needs to convert his fifties into hundreds,” the 40-year-old added.
