In the recently concluded Test match against New Zealand (at Galle), the bowling action of the 25-year-old right arm spinner was found to be above the permissible limit of 15 degrees and the on field umpires Michael Gough and Richard Illingworth (both England) reported the matter to the match referee Andy Pycroft.

Incidentally, it is the second time in last 12 months, the player has been reported for his action.

After being reported by the ICC, Akila worked extensively with Piyal Wijetunge and his re-modelled action was cleared in February. Piyal Wijetunge, however, is not attached with the SLC.

The sad news to Akila, who also bowls right arm off break and leg break, was conveyed by the team manager Ashantha de Mel.

Those who have viewed Akila’s reported footage at the High Performance Centre believes that there was not much of a difference in change in his bowling action. “I saw the footage when he was cleared and did not find any change in the footage we have received from the ICC on Monday”, one of the sources said to this reporter.

Akila can still be able to play till his action is again tested. However, the selectors may not take further chance and rest him for the 2nd Test commencing at P. Sara Oval, Colombo on Thursday.

SLC is likely to send him again to Chennai within ten days for further tests. This time he is likely to be accompanied by Jerome Jayaratne, it is also learnt here.

It is also learnt that New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who is a part time bowler is also reported for his bowling action.
