Ali hat-trick seals England win
England all-rounder Moeen Ali has taken a hat-trick on the fifth day of the third Test at The Oval, London as the hosts seal 239-run victory over South Africa to take 2-1 lead in the series.
Ali became the first bowler ever to take a hat-trick at the historic Kennington Oval, that too in the 100th Test match of the venue. He dismissed centurion Dean Elgar, Kagiso Rabada and Morne Morkel to claim hat-trick.
The Proteas started the day with 117/4 in 38 overs. Elgar and Temba Bavuma were at the crease. Elgar, who was on 72 on day four, brought up his eighth Test century. He made 136 runs from 228 deliveries with 20 fours.
South Africa lost three more wickets in the first session which put them further trouble in the match. As England required three wickets more, off-spinner Ali finished it off in style.
Elgar and Rabada were caught in the slips on the fifth and last balls of the 76th over. Ali returned to the attack in the 78th over and Morkel was on strike. He trapped him lbw to complete England’s victory and his magical hat-trick.
Ali took four wickets for 45 runs. Debutant Toby Roland-Jones took three wickets in the second innings after he took a fifer in the first. He and Ben Stokes also got opportunities to pick up a hat-trick in South Africa’s run-chase.
The fourth and final Test will be on August 4 at Old Trafford, Manchester.
