The other surprise inclusion was the hard-hitter batsman Asif Ali. Junaid Khan, Faheem Ashraf and Abid Ali were excluded from the squad. These three players made the preliminary 15-man squad which was announced a month ago but failed to make the final squad because of their poor performance.
Junaid Khan, Faheem Ashraf and Abid Ali didn’t upto the mark in the recent ODI series against Pakistan which just finished a day ago. England won that five match ODI series by 4-0. Junaid Khan and Faheem Ashraf both played two matches in that series. Junaid took 2 wickets at the economy rate of 7.47 whereas Faheem took just 1 wicket at the economy rate of 7.58. Batsman Abid Ali played the last ODI but failed to make any impact into the team as he scored just 5 runs off 9 balls.
Pakistan was much poor in the bowling section in the series against England. Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq pointed out this point to verify the inclusion of Amir and Wahab. “The bowling unit during the England ODIs has not clicked as anticipated or expected; if we have at our disposal two vastly experienced pace duo of Amir and Wahab, then it will be foolish not to include them,” chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq said.
Despite Amir failing to play in the ongoing England series due to suspected chicken pox, he was added in the World Cup squad. “As far as Amir is concerned, we never discarded him,” Inzamam clarified. “We now want to take a bowler who brings a bit of experience and the previous knowledge of having bowled in English conditions.”
Also Inzamam justified the selection of Wahab Riaz and Asif Ali. “Wahab’s ability to reverse swing the ball got him selected,” explained Inzamam, while announcing the changes to the squad. “Nobody expected the pitches in the UK will play flat even in the early season there (during the recent ODI series against England). So we have realised that and reviewed our selection.”
“And about Asif Ali, he has proved his firepower can be an asset for Pakistan in the tournament”. Asif has made a big mark in the recent series against England as he has scored 51 off 36 and 52 off 43 in the second and third ODIs and proved his worth to make it to the World Cup squad.
