Hazlewood suffered a side strain on the third morning of the first Test against Bangladesh , leaving the field seven balls into his first spell of the day. It was later confirmed the NSW quick would fly home at the conclusion of the match.
However, the Aussie selectors elected not to send another pacer in Hazlewood’s stead, considering the extremely spin-friendly conditions in Dhaka and in the expectation that a similar surface will be prepared for the second match in Chittagong next week.
“With Jackson Bird in the squad we are comfortable with our fast-bowling options for the second Test and have elected to add an additional spinner given the conditions we are likely to face in Chittagong,” Chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said
Meanwhile another Aussie pacer Pat Cummins said replacing the consistent Hazlewood, whose run of 22 consecutive Tests will come to an end, will be difficult. “He’s a big member of the group,” the 24-year-old said.
However, Cummins isn’t much worried as the side have Jackson Bird in the squad and he’s been bowling beautifully in the Mirpur practice nets.
“I am going to miss having dinner with him every night, but we have got Jackson Bird waiting in the wings which is great. He’s been bowling beautifully out the back (in the Mirpur practice nets) here. ”
He added on the same, “(Bird is) someone who has been around the team a long time and been bowling really well, had some great performances for Australia in the past as well.”
