Bangladesh have been struggling for a long time in T20Is in terms of openers. After Tamim Iqbal's retirement, no one except Litton Das can repay the trust in this place. Despite repeated experiments, the team could not overcome the shortage with genuine openers. So, the team have gone for makeshift openers recently.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Sabbir Rahman were the openers in the team's last 3 matches. Miraz played well but Sabbir failed. So, Sabbir who is in the World Cup team may lose his place in the opening in the upcoming New Zealand tri-series. He may be played elsewhere in the batting order and someone else can be examined in the opening.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan Papon said that two makeshift openers have been played simultaneously as part of the team management's experiment to overcome the plight of the opening. The team will examine more against New Zealand and Pakistan before the World Cup. However, the entire team combination including the opening pair will be decided roughly before the World Cup.
Papon said, “We were in such a situation that the team combination was not happening. Actually they are experimenting with the opening slots. I am surprised to hear about Sabbir's opening role. Because I have not seen him open before. They will go to New Zealand and do some more testing, then decide. The team that will play in the World Cup this time, we will play the same team until the next World Cup.”
