Bangladesh won big in the low scoring Chattogram Test

On a spinning track of Chattogram where ball was turning square batting became night mare Bangladesh earned it first test victory against West Indies at home by 64 runs. [আরও পড়ুন: টাইগারদের জয়ে টুইটার প্রতিক্রিয়া]

Bangladesh Won Big In The Low Scoring Chittagong Test

It must have tested sweeter after their bitter memory of comprehensive test series whitewash in tour to West Indies in not two distant pasts. Bangladesh goes 1-0 up in the two matches test series. The second test would start at SBNCS Dhaka on November 30, 2018. The win puts Bangladesh in advantageous position for winning the series and even for achieving series white wash.

Bangladesh batting first after winning the toss scored 324 runs in the first innings. West Indies replied with 246 conceding a first innings lead of 78. By the time Bangladesh batted second time the wicket deteriorated to such an extent that survival became extremely difficult. West Indies bowlers also exploited the wicket well reducing Bangladesh to 55/5 by stumps of day two.

In the morning session of day three Mahmudullah Riyad and Mehidy Hasan Miraz effected a very useful 37 runs 7th wicket partnership extending Bangladesh lead beyond 200. Bangladesh finished at 125 setting a target of 204 for Windies.  Given the state of the wicket and the quality of Bangladeshi spinners it was as good as scoring 400 runs.

Shakib Al Hasan and Taijul Islam immediately took air out of West Indies sail reducing them to 11/4 by lunch. From there on it was only a matter of time for West Indies to capitulate. The arm balls of Taijul and Shakib became too hot to handle. Mehidy and Nayeem Hasan also bowled at tight length.

Shakib Al Hasan became the fastest to 3000 runs and 200 wickets in Test cricket

Yet Ambris and Warricon applied themselves and caused put some butterfly in tummies of aspiring Bangladeshis. They put on a fighting 63 for the 9th wicket. But eventually Taijul put the icing on cake taking 6/63. But it was another milestone achieved for super Shakib. He reached his 200-test wicket in the test becoming the first Bangladesh bowler doing that. He also became the quickest test all rounder in the history of test cricket scoring over 3000 runs and taking 200 wickets. He did it in 54 test one less than great Sir Ian Botham. Ironically on the same day 24 November 2002 he took his 100th wicket against West Indies. Shakib has so far taken 18 five wickets haul and 2 ten wickets haul in test. His best 10/124 was against Zimbabwe in Khulna in 2000.

It was a team effort in winning the test. Bangladesh was lucky winning the toss and batting at the best period of wicket.  Mominul’s superlative batting in the first innings, Useful contribution by Shakib (36) and Imrul (44), resistance of Taijul (39*), debutant Nayeem (26) led to Bangladesh reaching impressive 324 in the first innings.

Nayeem bowled superbly in the first innings taking 5 wickets and in the process becoming the youngest batsman taking 5 wicket hauls in test cricket. Shakib also took 3/   inching closer to 200 mark.  In the second innings Mahmudullah’s 31 and his small but effective partnership with Mehidy led to Bangladesh setting a difficult target of over 200 . Then Taijul and Shakib served deadly blows for winning the test.

However, the feature of test was outstanding batting of little master Mominul Haque in the first innings scoring 120. His was the 8th century equaling the highest of Tamim Iqbal. He also equaled great Virat Kohli scoring 4 centuries in 2008. 6 of his 8 centuries were scored in Chattogram. He also became the second Bangladesh batsman scoring over 1000 runs in Chattogram after Mushfiqur Rahim. One can imagine the quality of his batting judging that the second-best score of the test was 63 and none could bat at the wicket as majestically as he did.

Nayeem delighted after a wicket

Bangladesh has now won the test and went ahead 1-0. They should thank their star that they won the toss. But batting still remains a major issue against quality pace and spin alike. Luckily for them Shannon Gabriel won’t be available in Dhaka test being suspended for violating ICC code of conduct. Top order batting specifically and batting in general needs close reviewing.

Same thing goes for West Indies. Bowling wise they were as good as the home team but batting is an issue. They do not look to have right technique against moving ball. We are not sure that they will get different wicket in Dhaka.

Watch Day-3 highlights here-

Mustafizur Rhman was a pedestrian in the test. He was not required to bowl while spinners made the hay while the sun shined. Bangladesh may review pace bowling option.

OUT! Caught. Taijul Islam to Sunil Ambris. Stock length ball, outside off stump on the front foot defending, missed to wicketkeeper, by Rahim. Unbelievable scenes in Bangladesh. Ambris is given out as he pushes forward but immediately signals for a review. Windies don't have any left though and UltraEdge shows he hasn't hit it.The game has see-sawed all day and eventually the home side come out on top. There was a moment when Ambris and Warrican were batting together which would have worried them but they stuck at it and knew it only required a couple of good deliveries to finish it off. Not a brilliant batting performance from the Windies in a chase of 204 and they would have hoped that their top-order could have contributed a lot more. Taijul Islam was fantastic though with the ball and his six wickets wickets won the game for his team.Onto Dhaka for the next Test and Windies need to win it to tie up the two match series.

OUT! Caught. Mehedi Hasan to Jomel Warrican. Off break length ball, off stump on the front foot Slog, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to deep mid wicket, by Al Hasan. Not a great shot from Warrican. One hand comes off the bat and he is not in control of where the ball is going. Straight up and the captain settles it with a decent catch over his shoulder. Bangladesh needed to break that partnership.
