Bashar opines cricketers to play longer version cricket more
Bangladesh have got some world class batsmen in their team at present undoubtedly. Still, the Tigers are staying at the bottom in terms of playing long innings. National team selector Habibul Bashar Sumon has advised cricketers to play domestic first-class matches to overcome this situation.
Recently the failure of the players to play big innings is worrying. Bashar opines that they are not able to play big innings not because of lack of fitness but because they do not have the habit of playing big innings.
Talking to BDCricTime, he said, “If you want to get out of the trend of getting out by fifty, you have to try to play long innings from domestic cricket. In these two years we have not been able to play first-class cricket very much. There is always an opportunity to bat longer in the longer version, to play big innings. This is where the habit is made. You don’t get that opportunity in ODIs or T20s. The time we couldn’t play first-class cricket has hurt us.”
“It’s a matter of habit to play long innings. That habit is made in the longer version. No one should be tired after fifty. Today’s boys are fit cricketers. They are much more fit, physically fit than us. It’s just a matter of concentration. It will be made only when you play a long innings in the domestic long version.”
However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the cricketers are not getting chances to play the long version properly. After overcoming last year’s stalemate, the National Cricket League (NCL) was on the field this year. However, the tournament was suspended due to coronavirus again.
But Bashar is in favor of keeping the game on the field for the good of cricket. He is also hopeful that the country’s cricket will be able to overcome the loss this year.
“It was not just a challenge for the selectors. This is a big challenge for Bangladesh cricket. Our job is basically with the national team. However, the scope of cricket in Bangladesh is much larger. Domestic cricket is important for cricket in any country. Domestic cricket was off for almost a year. Most of the players did not get a chance to play. This was not good news for Bangladesh cricket. Getting them back on the field was a big challenge. Now that they have started playing, so we can work with more players.
“Of course it’s a big challenge. We want to work with a lot of players. In that case, of course, there was a big challenge. But now that we are back on the field, the number of domestic matches is increasing, hopefully we will be able to return well by the end of this year,” Bashar added.
