At the indoor school in Bellerive Oval, the Western Australian batsman D’Arcy hit one back fiercely, the ball went straight to hit Kirsten. “It was wet, so we were in the indoor center. Darce [Short] just whacked one back at him that he didn’t pick up in time,” the Hurricanes skipper George Bailey told cricket.com.au later after the incident.

The fifty year old Kirsten was immediately to the dental hospital suffering from multiple broken teeth but luckily escaped surgical procedure.

Bailey further said, “[Kirsten] has actually come out of it very luckily in the big scheme of things. He said that he’s probably been a blase about that over the years. It’s obviously prompted [a change] – everyone has had [helmets] on since.”

D’Arcy Short, 27, is the leading Big Bash run scorer this season. Kirsten who has earlier been appointed as the mentor of IPL team Royale Challengers Bangalore, is guiding Hobart Hurricane this season.

Hurricane captain skipper Bailey, praising the youngster, said, “The really pleasing thing – his ball striking has always been phenomenal, it was last year as well – but now you can really see the structure he’s putting into his innings. He’s just hitting the ball where it needs to go, that’s the most pleasing thing from our end. It’s phenomenal to see.”
