Blackcaps seal comprehensive win in 1st ODI

New Zealand have taken 1-0 lead in the three-match series after pulling off a five-wicket victory in the first ODI against West Indies at Cobham Oval (New), Whangarei.

The Blackcaps elected to field first at the toss. West Indies made a slow start to their innings. At the team score of 40, Chris Gayle departed scoring 22 off 31 hitting 3 fours and a six. Shai Hope went for three-ball duck. Both wickets were taken by Doug Bracewell.

Evin Lewis put on 62-run stand with Shimron Hetmyer. Hetmyer made 29 off 42. West Indies middle-order failed to contribute. Lewis was given out to debutant Todd Astle in an unlucky fashion. He smashed 76 runs from 100 balls including 7 fours and a six.

Rovman Powell lifted West Indies total to 248/9 in 50 overs. He scored his maiden ODI half-century, 59 off 50 deliveries with 2 fours and 4 sixes. Kesrick Williams contributed 16* down the order.

Bracewell scalped four wickets for 55 runs on his return to international cricket. Astle took 3 for 33.

In reply, George Worker and Colin Munro gave a commanding start to the Kiwis as they put on 108 runs in 16.4 overs. Munro fell short on a fifty, scoring 36-ball 49 with 8 boundaries. Worker worked his way out to second ODI fifty with 59 from 66 bals hitting 8 fours.

Skipper Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor added 57 runs for the third wicket. Williamson was dismissed for 45-ball 38 by opposition captain Jason Holder. Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls, both 17 each, didn’t last too long.

Ross Taylor and Astle (15*) finished the game in 46 overs. Taylor remained unbeaten on 49* off 76. He was denied a half-century when Powell bowled a wide in New Zealand’s winning moment.

Holder and Ashley Nurse took two wickets each for the Caribbeans.
