The sixth edition of Bangladesh Premier League T20 is set to moved to 2019 due to its clash with general elections that will take place later this year. [নিউজটি বাংলায় পড়ুনঃ জাতীয় নির্বাচনের পরেই বিপিএল!]
The tournament was supposed to be in October-November. However, situation will be warm as elections come closer. And that’s why BPL Governing Council is concerned about security. If not this year, BPL’s next edition will be in January 2019.
“We are seriously thinking of deferring the BPL because it is likely to clash with the general elections. We are planning to host the tournament in January because in the time leading up to the elections it will be difficult to ensure security for the matches in three venues and of all the players in the seven franchises. We have not yet finalised anything but we will decide within a week. We cannot rule out the possibility of hosting the BPL in December also,” informed BPL GC member-secretary IH Mallick.
If BPL is in January, then there’s a clash with international series. Bangladesh are scheduled to host Zimbabwe for a bilateral series in January. It is not sure whether the series will be moved forward to December this year or after BPL. Moreover, Bangladesh will tour New Zealand in February-March next year.
BPL was initially held in January-February part of the year (2012 and 2013). But since 2015, it has been played in later part of the year. Rangpur Riders are the defending champions of the tournament.
