Bridegroom ‘flees’ wedding ceremony to watch Bangladesh’s cricket match

Bangladesh is known as a cricket crazy nation to the entire world. It is nothing new for the Bangladeshi cricket fans to produce bizarre incidents to show their affection for the sport, and also their admiration for the players who play it.Bridegroom flees from wedding ceremony to watch Bangladesh's cricket match

But what a fan has done recently during Bangladesh’s ongoing ODI series against Zimbabwe at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium is totally unprecedented.

A die-hard fan, named Ali Haider Lavlu, lives in the United States of America, though his paternal home is in Bishwanath’s Bukshail village in Sylhet.

He came to the country about a week ago to marry his girlfriend. But when he heard that Bangladesh cricket team is playing an international series in Sylhet, he just could not resist himself.

Lavlu literally “fled” the wedding ceremony, leaving behind the bride, in a bid to watch the second match between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe on Tuesday (March 3).

And he was not alone. He brought a number of his male friends and family members, who were part of the Borjatri (bridegroom’s party or attendants). Even his brother-in-law (bride’s younger brother) was present in the team, highly impressed with Lavlu’s love for cricket.Bridegroom in stadium

Lavlu told BDCricTime:

“I am a big fan of cricket. I have got married just today. And immediately after completing it, I directly came to the stadium, leaving my wife at home. I am big fan of Mashrafe (Bin Mortaza), Tamim (Iqbal) and Riyad (Mahmudullah). Actually I am a fan of the entire Bangladesh team.”

Lavlu’s brother-in-law Fahim Ahmed said, “We have all come together. I am proud to have this kind of Dulabhai (sister’s bridegroom). Everyone should have such patriotism.”

Lavlu’s close friend Shamsujjaman Shipon said, “He (Lavlu) has come to Bangladesh for marriage. But the interesting thing is, he was calling me time to time and taking updates of the match from the marriage stage.

“When the initial parts of the marriage ceremony finished at the community center, he just went home to leave his wife there, and then rode on the marriage car again to come here in the stadium.”
