Considering Shuvagata as a batting all-rounder: Nannu
All-rounder Shuvagata Hom Chowdhury has been included in Bangladesh’s 21-member preliminary squad for the two-match Test tour in Sri Lanka.
The last time Shuvagata donned in national colours was back in October, 2016 when he played against England in the longest version in Dhaka.
Shuvagata’s last T20I match also came in 2016 during the ICC World T20 in India, while he last played in a 50-over match way back in October, 2011.
So, this is a good opportunity for the Mymensingh-born right-hand batsman and off-break bowler to finally make his long cherished return to the national side, provided that he is selected for the final squad which will be announced after an intra-squad warm-up game in Sri Lanka.
It is being speculated that Shuvagata has been considered as a potential replacement for ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, who has decided to skip the tour to take part in the 14th Indian Premier League (IPL).
While reflecting on the decision to include Shuvagata in the preliminary squad that will travel to Sri Lanka, chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu stressed upon his consistency in the country’s first-class structure.
“Shuvagata is coming back after a while but he has been a consistent performer in first class cricket. We have considered him as a batting all-rounder but his off-break is pretty handy also and gives us an option in the spin department,” said Nannu.
Shuvagata, who plays for Dhaka Division in the National Cricket League, smacked a century in his most recent match against Sylhet Division in Cox’s Bazar. In that match, he had scores of 114 and 20 not-out, while also took 6 wickets in two innings.
In Test cricket, Shuvagata has so far played 8 matches and scored 244 runs with a fifty, while he also has 8 wickets to his credit.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh preliminary squad for Sri Lanka tour also boasts of three uncapped pacers in Shoriful Islam, Mukidul Islam Mugdho and Shohidul Islam.
“They (Shoriful, Mukidul and Shohidul) have been in our HP set up and have impressed in whichever version they have played in. Mukidul and Shohidul in particular, have caught the eye in domestic first class this season and are future Test prospects. They all have age on their side and are talented,” said Nannu.
