Chennai Super Kings have dismantled Kings XI Punjab hopes as they secure their ninth win by five wickets in the last league game of Indian Premier League 2018 at MCA Stadium, Pune. Rajasthan Royals qualify for the playoffs as the fourth team.
Kings XI needed to win by 53 runs or chase with 38 balls remaining in order to qualify for the playoffs.
CSK sent KXIP to bat first at the toss. Punjab needed a good start from openers Chris Gayle and KL Rahul. Lungi Ngidi got both the openers on a seam-friendly track. Gayle nicked one down the leg-side but umpire didn’t give him out. The Jamaican was honest enough to leave.
The man in form Rahul was bowled by a inswinger. Aaron Finch’s dismissal to Rahul Chahar put Kings XI in trouble at 16/3. Manoj Tiwary and David Miller rescued with a 60-run stand.
Tiwary made 30-ball 35 with 3 fours and a six. Miller was bowled by Dwayne Bravo yorker for 24. Punjab’s lower-order collapsed but Karun Nair gave his team something to bowl. The right-hander smashed 54 runs from 26 deliveries including 3 fours and 5 sixes.
KXIP were dismissed for 153 in 19.4 overs. Ngidi bowled a brilliant spell of 4/10 in four overs including one maiden.
In reply, the swing troubled CSK too as the lost their best batsman of the season Ambati Rayudu in the second over. Ankit Rajpoot made further inroads dismissing Faf du Plessis and Sam Billings on consecutive balls.
Harbhajan Singh was sent in at No.5 to play some shots. He did play a few shots in his 22-ball 19. Ravichandran Ashwin got rid him. However, MS Dhoni was yet to come. Deepak Chahar joined Suresh Raina for the fifth-wicket.
Chahar shattered Punjab’s hopes as he played a quickfire knock of 39 runs off 20 balls including a four and 3 sixes. Raina and Dhoni finished the game in the last over by five wickets. Raina batted 48 balls for 61* runs hitting 4 fours and 2 sixes.
