Curran four-fer edge England on day one against South Africa
Sam Curran’s four star performance with the ball provided England the upper edge in the first day of the Boxing Day Test against South Africa at the Super Sport Park in Centurion.
At stumps of the opening day, South Africa were restricted to 277 losing 9 wickets in their first innings.
The home team might fall in greater trouble had not Quinton de Kock shepherd the team at the time of reeling at 111 for the loss of 5 wickets. de Kock unhappily fall five runs short of what could be a sixth hundred at the end.
de Kock’s defiance came off 128 deliveries with 14 shots to cross the rope.
England bowlers led by Sam Curran claimed five wickets inside 37 overs. De Kock partnering with debutant Dwaine Pretorius added 87 in sixth wicket and later another 47 with Philander.
Vernon Philander and Kagiso Rabada ended the day unbeaten on 28 and 12 respectively.
Meanwhile, England ace paceman James Anderson made an impressive comeback stepping into the history with 150th Test appearance. He had Proteas’ opener Dean Elgar in the opening delivery of the day. Anderson is now the second most capped English cricketer after Sir Alastair Cook.
Prior to the Test match, England squad was disrupted by illness with a bug that forced several front line performers like Ollie Pope, Chris Woakes and Jack Leach ruled out of the game.
