Dhawan to lead India in Sri Lanka tour

Indian left-handed batsman Shikhar Dhawan has been named as the Indian skipper for the upcoming limited-overs series against Sri Lanka.

India are gearing up for the final of the ICC World Test Championship. In the Final, India will face New Zealand which will be played at Southampton, England. Following the Test Championship Final, India will play a five-match Test series against England which will kickstart India’s next Test Championship.

In the gap between the final of the World Test Championship and the England series, India are scheduled to have a limited-overs tour to Sri Lanka. India will play three T20Is and three ODIs there. The series will start with the ODI series on July 13th. With the current situation in Sri Lanka, all six matches are expected to be played in R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.

Meanwhile, BCCI released the touring squad to Sri Lanka. The left-handed batsman Shikhar Dhawan is named as the skipper for the subsidiary squad as the Test squad members will continue to stay in England. The right-arm fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar will serve as the deputy. Shreyas Iyer who is currently going under rehabilitation will miss the tour.

The left-arm fast bowler T Natarajan is also not included as he recently had knee surgery and is continuing with his rehabilitation. IPL rising stars Chetan Sakariya, Devdutt Paddikal, and Ruturaj Gaikwad have earned their maiden call-up to the national side. With the current window allocated for hosting the remainder of the IPL 2021, this might be India’s last T20I series before the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
