DJ Bravo recalls how he convinced MI to sign Pollard
Kieron Pollard is widely recognised as one of the crucial cogs of the Mumbai Indians’ team. The defending champions just cannot imagine their machinery without the all-rounder’s services because Pollard is someone who has often helped them score runs in the death overs.
His useful runs in the fag end of the overs helped the team post good totals. MI have defended the totals and stole many victories from the jaws of the defeat. Moreover, the all-rounder can also bowl pretty decently with tight line and lengths.
Pollard often bowls slower deliveries to deceive the batsmen. He has been with Mumbai Indians for over a decade. The Caribbean has been a perfect T20 package to Rohit Sharma. But now many would know how the West Indies limited-overs captain signed for the Mumbai Indians around a decade ago.
Talking about it, his West Indies teammate and compatriot Dwayne Bravo opened on how Pollard was signed by MI. Bravo also spoke about the role he played for Mumbai to sign the productive all-rounder. His signing as a 19-year-old on such a staggering amount was the real deal.
“When Mumbai Indians needed a replacement for me, I gave them Kieron Pollard’s name. When they tried contacting him, he was playing for a club, so I recommended Dwayne Smith and he became my replacement.
“The following year, when it was the Champions League, I called Rahul (Sanghvi) and told Pollard, he’s here. Come and sign him now before the tournament starts. Rahul and Robin Singh left Mumbai and came to Hyderabad, I’ll never forget they came with a contract which at that time was 200,000 USD.
I called Pollard, who came downstairs and met them both in the lobby. He saw the contract. Now for coming from Trinidad, as a 19-year-old, that was wow. He said, ‘Dwayne are you serious?” said Bravo as quoted by Cricbuzz.
