Dominating England clinch series win
Dominating England team have secured a series win over Sri Lanka by beating the hosts by 18 runs under D/L method in the fourth ODI in Kandy.
Englishmen are now on their outing to Sri Lanka to play a complete series of all formats of the game. The ODI series started the tour proceedings of England. With three ODIs completed before this one, the visitors were leading the series 2-0 with the first ODI was forced to abandon due to rain.
With a dominating hand in the series so far, England took the hosts in Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele. While the hosts came into the game in the vision of keeping the series alive. Visiting captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and elected to bowl first in a gloomy morning.
As stated earlier, Jonny Bairstow missed the game with his ankle injury. On the visitors’ side, they made some changes in a nothing to lose situation.
Hosts were stuck with an early blow as Sadeera Samarawickrama departed on 1. After the early blow, Chandimal and Dickwella put a strong base for the Sri Lankan innings with 70 runs partnership. Dickwella went on to score his seventh ODI half-century.
The breakthrough of the second wicket partnership brought two more wickets for England in quick succession. After the failure of middle-order batsmen, lower-order batsmen and tail-enders did their best to put a competitive total on the scoreboard since Sri Lanka wrote 273/7 in the scorecard.
Dasun Shanaka, Thisara Perera and Akila Dananjaya were instrumental in the total with their scores of 66, 44 and 32 respectively. For the visitors, Moeen Ali bagged two wickets.
In reply were asked to chase 274 to ensure the series win. The destructive opening duo Jason Roy and Alex Hales put a strong foundation for the England chase with a quick half-century stance. While Hales didn’t score big, Roy missed his fifty by five runs.
Following the wickets of openers, Joe Root and England captain Eoin Morgan took the control over their chase. When England’s chase was going strong, rain started to play its part like what happened throughout the series. Rain interrupted the play during the 27th over when the visitors were 132/2.
Eoin Morgan and Joe Root were on 31 and 32 respectively. Umpires called the groundsmen to cover the ground at the end of 27th over. Till then rain didn’t show any mercy on the field.
During the rain interruption, England were 18 runs ahead of the D/L par score as it was 114. Nearly after one hour of rain interruption, England were announced as the winners, beating Sri Lanka by 18 runs on DLS. Eoin Morgan was named as the man of the match.
With this win, England lead the series 3-0 and the visitors are continuing their domination in the ODI format while the hosts are extending their weak run in color clothes.
