England become the new World champions in super over clash
After 47 matches, it came down to two teams fighting for their glory at the home of Cricket,
Winning the toss, New Zealand skipper chose to bat first without any hesitation. Out of form Martin Guptill failed yet again for one last time in this World Cup as he departed for 19. However, his partner Henry Nicholls (55) scored a solid fifty before departing to Liam Plunkett.
Skipper Williamson was trapped LBW for 30 while Tom Latham (47) played sensible innings in the end to take New Zealand to a fighting total of 241 runs.
In reply, New Zealand fast bowlers were all over the hosts and Jason Roy was the first man to go courtesy of a great delivery from Matt Henry. England captain Eoin Morgan also failed to take on the pressure as he departed for only 9 while Joe Root departed after a very struggling stay at the crease.
With 86 for 4 down, the hosts were crumbling under pressure and they needed a massive partnership to stay alive. Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes did exactly what England needed and built a solid 100-run partnership to make a comeback in the game.
New Zealand’s leading wicket-taker Lockie Ferguson broke the crucial partnership as he removed Buttler for 59. Stokes was the man once again for England, who was the last hope to take them over the line. He didn’t win them the game, but he took his side to the super over.
England batted in the super overs and scored 16 runs with Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler at the crease. In reply, the inexperienced Jofra Archer bowled for England in the super over and conceded a wide and a six in the first two balls. But he came back and exceedingly well. New Zealand needed 2 runs in the last over and a brilliant yorker for Archer let Guptill only take a single. It was tie once again in the super over but England hit more boundaries in the 50 overs and it made them the champions in the end.
Guptill was run-out when he tried to take the second run and the stadium erupted as England finally become the World Champions for the first time.
