Exclusive: Women’s T20 Cricket included in Commonwealth Games 2022
The Commonwealth Game in Birmingham 2022 will be the first major multi-sport event to have Women’s cricket included.
On Tuesday, Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has confirmed the inclusion of Women’s T20 Cricket at Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Game after a joint bid by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
Along with Women’s T20 Cricket, beach volleyball and para table tennis have also made their entries into the competition.
This is the first time cricket has been included in the Commonwealth Games since 1998 in Kuala Lumpur when South Africa won the Gold in the men’s 50-over competition.
Manu Sawhney, Chief Executive of the International Cricket Council said,
“This is a truly historic moment for women’s cricket and for the global cricket community, who were united in their support of this bid,”
“Women’s cricket continues to go from strength to strength, and we are delighted and honoured the Commonwealth Games Associations voted to include Women’s T20 cricket at Birmingham 2022.
As many as eight teams will compete at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games with all matches to be played at the Edgbaston cricket ground.
Dame Louise Martin, Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president said, “We are passionate advocates of women’s sport and Para-sport so I am thrilled we are able to make this special announcement.”
The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will take place in England from 27th July to 7th August 2022. The competition will see 4,500 athletes competing across 18 sports.
