Execution of bowlers was poor: MS Dhoni
Chennai Super Kings succumbed to a defeat at the hands of Delhi Capitals at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. DC skipper Rishabh Pant won the toss and chose to bowl first. CSK lost their openers Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad to Avesh Khan and Chris Woakes respectively.
Despite losing two wickets early on, CSK found great support in the form of Suresh Raina and Moeen Ali. The duo constructed a 53-run partnership for the third wicket. But Moeen Ali managed to score 36 off 24 balls. The England all-rounder hit 4 fours and 2 sixes to his name.
Suresh Raina played a sensational knock on his comeback as he scored a terrific half-century. While he looked good to score a big knock, he was dismissed in a controversial manner. Raina departed after scoring 54 off 36 balls including 3 fours and 4 sixes.
Sam Curran added value in the end as he scored 34 off 15 balls. He thumped 4 fours and 2 sixes as CSK posted 188/7 in 20 overs. Chris Woakes and Avesh Khan took 2 wickets apiece. In reply, Delhi Capitals chased down the target in 18.4 overs and won the game by 7 wickets. Dhawan top-scored with 85 whereas Prithvi Shaw scored 72.
What did MS Dhoni say at the post-match presentation?
“A lot depended on dew, and that factor played on our mind from the start and that’s why we wanted to get as many runs as possible. The batters they did a good job to reach 188, because it was tacky until dew settled in 50 minutes later.
We could have bowled slightly better, and if batters are hitting you over the fields, that’s fair enough. The execution of the bowlers was poor and there were boundary balls that they bowled, but the bowlers will have learned and they will apply that in future games.
The opposition have half an hour in a 7:30 start when the pitch is really tacky and the ball stops a bit, so we need to get 15-20 runs extra to be safe. If we get dew consistently, then 200 will be a must on a pitch like this.
Their (Delhi) bowlers bowled a great line when it was stopping and seaming a bit, and the openers got really good balls in which they got out and that can happen in a game like this,” MS Dhoni said.
