Gayle inspired me to bat confidently : Sabbir Rahman

Sabbir Rahman was one of the most regular and important members of the Bangladesh ODI and T20I team throughout the year 2015. As a result, apart from the icons he was one of the most wanted cricketers at the BPL-3 draft ceremony and eventually Barisal Bulls were lucky to have him in the side. But Sabbir’s on-field performance was a matter of concern since the launching of the tournament.
However Sabbir finally came back to form during Barisal’s all-important Eliminator game against Dhaka Dynamites on Saturday where he came to bat at No.3 and smashed 41 off 39, built on three sixes and as many boundaries to help his side reach a confident total of 135, which his side later would defend easily to confirm their Qualifier-2 berth. Barisal will lock horns with Rangpur Riders at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur today at 6.30pm.
At the post match press conference on Saturday, Sabbir revealed that it was his own decision to promote himself up the order and bat at No.3. “It was my own choice. I wanted it earlier but because of my having lack of confidence, team management chose someone else. But today (yesterday) I forcefully snatched the position and I was lucky to get some runs.”
Sabbir also added, “I felt like I should be batting at top so that I can play the pacers. I thought I would be able to utilize the initial phase of six overs and that confidence helped me do better.”
However the cat-eyed all-rounder didn’t seem to be much confident in the beginning as he needed to wait till the 12th ball he faced to get off the mark. But Sabbir said it was because he was willing to settle in at the crease and Chris Gayle, who was at the other end, cheered and inspired him to play his natural game.
“Chris was very helpful. Between the overs he was telling me to play my natural game and that’s exactly what I did in the middle. Maybe I was crawling to open the account but once I did, I was confident to get over from then on,” revealed Sabbir.
