Gayle passes 250 ODI sixes
West Indies star Chris Gayle has become the third player in ODI history to hit 250 sixes. He achieved the feat in the fifth ODI against England in Southampton.
Gayle launched five sixes and a four in his knock of 40 runs from 29 deliveries. He started slowly and then came hard at Jake Ball in the fifth over. He hit Ball for three consecutive sixes to reach 250 maximums in ODI cricket.
He smashed two more in the innings before getting out to debutant Tom Curran in the eighth over.
Gayle has now 252 sixes in 273 matches (268 innings). For West Indies, he has 251 in 270 games (265 innings). He hit one six for ICC World XI in three matches.
Gayle has now Sanath Jayasuriya and Shahid Afridi ahead of him. Jayasuriya had hit 270 sixes in 445 ODIs (433 innings) while Afridi still tops the list with 351 maximums in 398 matches (369 innings).
Before the ODI series began, the Jamaican six machine became the first batsman to hit 100 sixes in T20Is. He has 103 currently. He is two short of century of sixes in Test cricket. The 38-year-old is expected to return in Tests.
