Gayle’s blistering knock seals easy win for Punjab
Chris Gayle’s blistering hundred made it all too easy for the Kings XI Pubjan to secure a comfortable victory by 15 runs against table toppers Sunrisers Hyderabad in match number 16 of the Indian Premier League (IPL). All-rounder Shakib Al Hasan tasted his first defeat in the season.
After Kings XI Punjab opted to bat first, Lokesh Rahul departed early but that didn’t stop Gayle from hitting the bowlers all over the park. Right from the word go, the Windies opener was dealing with only sixes.
The unbeaten knock of 104 runs includes 11 massive sixes and only 1 four. Along with Gayle, little cameos from Aaron Finch and Karun Nair guided Punjab to a huge score of 193 runs in their 20 overs.
As like most of the Sunrisers’ bowlers, Shakib was expensive with the ball as he conceded 28 runs in the two overs he bowled.
In reply, Sunrisers lost Wriddiman Saha early and lost their in form batsman Shikhar Dhawan who was retired hurt. Skipper Kane Willamson gave a glimpse of hope to his side with a steady fifty but that didn’t help in the end.
Manish Pandey, who scored unbeaten 57 runs was the leading scorer for his side but the low strike rate made it too difficult for the table toppers to chase down the huge score.
When victory was already out of the sight, Shakib (24* off 12) came to the crease and hit back to back sixes in the over of Ravichandan Ashwin, but it was too late for the number all-rounder to take his side over the line.
