Sri Lanka spinner Wanindu Hasaranga claimed the honor of being the Twenty/20 World Cup 2021's top wicket taker, leaving behind all the big names.
Three-wicket hauls against England, South Africa and the Netherlands earned the all-rounder an impressive total of 16 wickets to oust the impressive Australia pair of Adam Zampa and Josh Hazlewood.
His 16-wicket haul came in eight matches and the most impressive part is he took these wickets with an economy rate of 5.2 per over and with a strike rate of 11.2. He also scored 119 runs from five innings with a strike rate of 148.75. Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka rightly said Hasaranga “is a gem, and a superstar in the making”.
The highly-rated Sri Lankan all-rounder had a superb tournament overall as he made great impact with the ball and also played a couple of handy innings with the bat. Hasaranga took 16 wickets in this edition of the T20 World Cup, which is a record as he overtook fellow countryman Ajantha Mendis (15 wickets in 2012) as the highest wicket taker in a single edition.
It was Zampa who secured second in the standings ahead of fellow finalist Trent Boult, of New Zealand, each on 13 wickets. Zampa grabbed a five wicket haul in the SUper 12 match against Bangladesh. He was pretty economical too.
Shakib Al Hasan led through the early stages of the tournament before injury struck during the Super 12s. Mitchell Starc led a host of bowlers who finished up on nine wickets apiece.
South African duo Nortje and Pretorious have picked 9 wickets each. They were pretty adroit with the ball. Nortije was lethal with the pace, while mixing up his deliveries to deceive the batters on a regular basis. Pretorious is not among the express bowlers, but he has bowled smartly.
England's Leggie Adil Rashid bamboozled the West Indian on the very beginning of the campaign. Took 4 for 2 in that match. Another Leg spinner Shadab Khan did well too. In the final he had bowled really well to take 4 wickets. Kiwi leg spinner Sodhi was one of the key performers for his team. All of them got 9 wickets each.
Leg spinners have brought some revolution in Twenty/20 cricket for the last couple of years. And it was show cased during this ICC event.
