Hathurusingha is best in the business: Mathews

Less than a week to go for the start of the tri-nation series and Sri Lanka were yet to announce their new captain. But finally on Tuesday, the Sri Lankan cricket board has announced the new capain and so as the 16-man squad for the tri-nation series.

Angelo Mathews, who stepped down as captain six months ago is once again named the captain of Sri Lanka. After quitting the captaincy, Mathews thought that he would never take the captaincy role again, but it was the new coach Chandika Hathurusingha for whom the miracle happened.

Mathews after being appointed as the captain again on Tuesday, he admitted in the press conference that Hathurusingha convinced him to take the responsibility again. He said: “I have known Hathu [Hathurasingha] for a long time. I know how he operates. He is not here to survive. It is very easy to work with him as he has his goals. He played a major part in me making this decision to take up the captaincy again. He is going to be an important part in the run-up to the World Cup campaign.”

Hathurusingha also told the reason of giving Mathews the responsibility again in the press conference: “My reason for backing Angelo was that I needed the best person to lead the side. We wanted someone who was sure of his place in the side to lead the team.”
