Hathurusingha removed as Sri Lanka’s selector-on-tour

Sri Lanka coach Chandika Hathurusingha has been removed as Sri Lanka’s selector with immediate effect by Sri Lanka Cricket.

In the ongoing tour of Australia, Sri Lanka cricket have decided to remove Hathurusingha as selector to decrease the responsibility of the Sri Lanka coach. It also means that the playing XI’s on this tour will be decided by the team manager and captain in consultation with the national selection committee.

SLC released a statement on Wednesday

“The team on tour shall be made by a committee comprising of team manager and captain in consultation with the national selection committee. The majority decision of the manager, captain and members of the selection committee shall prevail on any selection made thereof.”

SLC president Thilanga Sumathipala, the previous SLC executive committee had made Hathurusingha a selector-on-tour by way of a compromise. But just after being the selector for the tour, Hathurusinghe asked to be made a full fledged selector. But the SLC didn’t like the proposal.

According to SLC, the decision to now limit Hathurusingha’s powers was taken under the instruction of Sri Lanka’s sports ministry. However, Hathurusingha will continue to be consulted in team selection, but his opinions are likely to be less prioritized now.
