Hayden threatened to punch me in the face: Parthiv Patel
Former India wicket-keeper batsman Parthiv Patel has an intimate relationship with former Australia opener Matthew Hayden thanks to the Indian Premier League (IPL). But in the beginning it was not like that. The former Australian was once very angry with the Indian wicketkeeper. He threatened to punch Parthiv.
Now the two address the two as friends. But 16 years ago a situation on the field was the opposite. Parthiv himself informed about this incident. Parthiv made his first tour of Australia at the age of 18 as India’s wicketkeeper-batsman.
He was not in the XI in that ODI match in Gabba. Although Hayden scored 109 runs in the match, he was dismissed by Irfan Pathan at a very important time. His mood was grim. When leaving the field, the two of them got tied up as soon as Parthiv passed by him.
“I was serving water in Brisbane. Irfan sent him (Hayden) out. He got the century but was out at the crucial moment. I sledged him by fun while he was passing. He became very angry. The dressing room in Brisbane is like a tunnel. He was standing there. He looked at me and said, ‘If you do that again, you will get punched in the face.’ After saying sorry, he left.”
Parthiv-Hayden’s understanding built up in the dressing room of Chennai Super Kings in the IPL. Parthiv said about this in a program of ‘Hindustan Times’, ”He wanted to beat me up in Brisbane. But later we became good friends. We played together at CSK. When I went to Australia for the emerging team at the end of the IPL, Hayden invited me to his house and prepared chicken biryani and dal for me.”
