Highlights: England vs Australia, Champions Trophy 2017

England have beaten Australia by 40 runs in DLS method after no further play was possible due to rain after 40.2 overs of the match. England were 240/4 with Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler remaining not out on the crease with 102 and 29 runs respectively. Because of this loss, Australia have been knocked out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. It is now England and Bangladesh from Group A to qualify for the semifinals of the tournament.

Chasing a modest target of 278 runs set by the Aussies, England had the worst beginning possible, losing Jason Roy in the very first over, and then Alex Hales in the following one to become 6 for 2 in just 1.2 overs. Joe Root too fell cheaply when England’s team total was 35 in 5.4 overs.

But then came the partnership between Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes. These two batsmen produced somewhat a poorer repetition but marginally an equally effective batting display like what Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah Riyad did the other day to get the better of New Zealand.

Morgan and Stokes batted wonderfully well, eating up all the pressure, and shared a brilliant 159-run between them before the English skipper was dismissed through an unfortunate run-out as result of a horrible mix-up with Stokes in the 32nd over of the innings.

Stokes was unbeaten on 102 off 109 balls, with his knock featuring 13 fours and 2 sixes. Jos Buttler’s 32-ball 29-ball knock included 3 fours and one six.

For Australia, Josh Hazlewood took two wickets for 50 runs in 9 overs, while the other wicket went to Mitchell Starc’s kitty. Starc gave away 52 runs in his 10 overs.
