If Smith wants captaincy, I will support him fully: Tim Paine
Australia superstar batsman Steve Smith was banned from international cricket for one year for a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in 2018. And the leadership was banned for two years. But the Aussie superstar is again available to captain the Aussies as he completes his ban.
So the speculation has started already – will he return to captaincy again? Although Smith has not said anything, current captain Tim Paine has said he will support Smith in this context.
Paine will be happy to return under the leadership of Smith, saying,
“He is captain of the Rajasthan Royals in IPL and The Hundred’s Wales Fire team. It’s something he loves to do. If Steve Smith decides he wants to go that way, I will fully support him again.”
Many former Australian cricketers want to see Smith as captain. Under his leadership, Australia have won 18 of the 34 Tests. There were 10 losses and 6 draws. 25 wins and 23 losses in 51 ODIs. 4 wins and 4 losses in 8 T20I matches. Two years ago, Smith was banned for engaging in a ball tampering scandal in the Cape Town Test against South Africa. The 35-year-old wicket-keeper batsman, Paine has been leading the Australia Test team since then.
