Imrul used to open with Tamim Iqbal in Tests before Soumya Sarkar was promoted to opening slot. He batted at one-down against Sri Lanka in the second Test and made scores of 34 and 0.

“I have batted at three during the Sri Lanka series and talked to the coach, who gave me the option and said ‘bat at three’.

“I am preparing for the Tests at the net sessions while keeping this in mind. In fact at domestic level I have batted at three during certain matches.

“It’s difficult…but I am having to adjust myself accordingly,” said Imrul at the press conference on Tuesday.

Imrul’s then opening partner Tamim Iqbal also said before that batting at three is difficult for Imrul. They have been Bangladesh’s successful opening pair in last three years. They recorded Bangladesh’s only triple-century partnership for the first wicket against Pakistan in 2015 Khulna Test.

“Yes, what Tamim said is right. When I am padded up, I get very eager and nervous about getting onto the pitch as well.

“I wasn’t used to it but in some matches I have played at number three. It’s a matter of what is better for the team and what the management feels is best – so that’s why I have to play.”

Two of Imrul’s three Test centuries came when he opened the batting.
