IPL 2020: Kings XI keen to appoint Kumble as head coach
Former India skipper and head coach, Anil Kumble could be seen returning to coaching in the lucrative Indian Premier League and according to a report, Kings XI Punjab is keen to land in the signature of Anil Kumble.
According to a report in Mumbai Mirror, Anil Kumble is in advanced talks with the franchise and a final decision over the team’s future head coach will be taken when the board of the franchise meets soon.
The report goes on to add saying that Kumble might soon arrange a format meeting with the franchise owners.
The former India leg-spinner has previously been linked with Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore as their chief mentor. In 2016, he was roped in as the team India’s head coach for a period of one year.
Under his tutelage, India got the better of West Indies and dominated at home in the 2016/17 season. He resigned from his post a day after India lost the final of ICC Champions Trophy 2017 owing to untenable relation with captain Virat Kohli.
Anil Kumble who is India’s highest wicket-taker in Tests and ODIs, did not take up any coaching role since then. It would be quite interesting to see his link-up with KXIP Punjab to the T20 league.
In the previous season, KXIP had Mike Hesson as their head coach. Hesson quit his post and joined RCB after he came second in the race for India head coach job and eventially Ravi Shastri got the nod for India head coach position.
Along with Mike Hesson, Craig McMillan, Sridharan Sriram and Ryan Harris are the other notable names who quit their post. Their stay at the franchise lasted for just 1 year as they replaced Virender Sehwag, Brad Hodge, Venkatesh Prasad and Mithun Manhas before IPL 2019.
The report also adds saying that George Bailey has accepted KXIP’s invite to join them as a batting coach. Australia’s former white-ball captain, Bailey is yet to retire from cricket and is currently playing Marsh one-day cup for Tasmania.
In fact, he was about to making his comeback to the Test side last year for the fourth game against South Africa after the ball-tampering saga.
The IPL 2020 auction will happen in Kolkata on December 19. The transfer window is open till November 14.
It should be noted that Mumbai Indians have already traded Mayank Markande to Delhi Capitals. Ajinkya Rahane and Ravichandran Ashwin are also in line to join Shreyas Iyer-led side for the upcoming season.
