IPL: Ravi Ashwin likely to play for Delhi Capitals
Kings XI Punjab has released Ravichandran Ashwin from the squad. He had led Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2018 and IPL 2019 and it were seasons of disappointment as the team finished 7th and 6th respectively. R Ashwin was in the receiving end of trolls and abuses for his poor captaincy for both the seasons.
In 2018 auction, KXIP purchased the services of R Ashwin for 7.6 crore rupees and also retained him the next season. Before landing himself in KXIP, the 32-year old off-spinner was an important player of Chennai Super Kings.
As per ESPNcricinfo, Delhi Capitals franchise has decided to pick Ravichandran Ashwin for the upcoming Indian Premier League season and this deal would be a cash buyout only. Delhi is one of the few teams that has never won the IPL title and if Ashwin is picked, he will be in the grand scheme of things to turn things around.
Kings XI already have a mix of experience and youth in spinners. Amit Mishra, Axar Patel, Jalaj Saxena, Nepal’s Sandeep Lamchhane and others will be bolstered by Ashwin’s presence which will make them strong spin battery in the IPL.
In IPL 2019, under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer’s, Delhi Capitals did qualify for playoffs first time since 2012. Delhi finished the league table at the third position in 2019. In last season, Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer were Delhi Capitals’ top batting performers.
As Ravichandran Ashwin is released from the franchise, now KL Rahul is regarded as the first choice for the new skipper of Kings XI Punjab. Rahul has been really outstanding for KXIP and was the team’s top performer in last two seasons. In IPL 2018 and IPL 2019 seasons, he was the 3rd and 2nd highest run-scorer.
The team already boasts two experienced players Chris Gayle and David Miller, who have a snippet of captaincy experience. It is hard to admit that both have a bad record as captain. David Miller has skippered KXIP in 6 matches out of which team was able to win just one match. Moreover, Chris Gayle also didn’t prove his worth as West Indies cricket team captain.
