Irfan-Hridoy snatch victory for Shanto XI in opening game
Shanto XI won the opening game against Mahmudullah XI in BCB President’s Cup. The low scoring thriller turned into a comfortable chase after Tawhid Hridoy and Irfan Sukkur built a 100-run partnership.
After electing to bowl first, Shanto and his men got a good start as they picked up some early wickets. Openers Naim Sheikh and Liton Das failed to make a mark. Taskin Ahmed, who is looking in good shape since the two-day practice match bowled beautifully today as well and picked up the wicket of Liton in his opening spell.
Losing three wickets early, skipper Mahmudullah led from the front along with Imrul Kayes. While the left-handed batsman departed after a well-made 40, skipper scored the first fifty of the tournament. However, he could not make it long and his side felt apart at his dismissal. Mahmudullah XI were bowled out for 196 runs in the end.
In reply, Shanto XI also had a poor start with the bat. Both Saif Hassan and Soumya Sarkar departed early followed by the captain and Mushfiqur Rahim. The batting side were in all sorts of trouble with 79/5.
When it looked like the game was going away, Tawhid Hridoy and Irfan Sukkur built a solid partnership of 104 runs to turn the game upside down. Hridoy reached to his fifty and departed for 52 while Sukkur remained unbeaten on 56* and took the side over the line.
Shanto XI won by 4 wickets in the end with 8.5 overs to spare. Tawhid Hridoy was named man of the match for his brilliant knock of 52 including 2 fours and 2 sixes.
