Is it right time for MS Dhoni to hang his ODI shoes?

The hot topic around the cricket world after the final of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 is what next with India’s former World Cup-winning captain and present wicket-keeper batsman MS Dhoni.

Dhoni with SS bat

In the last two years, there have been so many debates around the Ranchi boy regarding his form with the bat in international cricket. He had the worst 2016 and managed to come overcome that with some sort of decent performances in 2017.

Then he went through an electrifying form with the bat during Indian Premier League 2018. And he did so in this year’s edition too. But when it comes to Blue jersey he was comparatively out of touch during 2018 and but did a splendid job in 2019 and carrying that till now.

Many wanted him to play ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 and he did so. He showed his value in the semi-final game too when the team lost all the hopes. But the question now is what next with him as past is always past. There are so many reports coming about his place in the Indian team after this and many of them are claiming that he is no more an automatic selection.

It is a definite one that the World Cup-winning captain will not be a part of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 which will be hosted by India. So India should prepare a proper wicket-keeper batsman to replace his place in the next big tournament.

As long as Dhoni stays in the team, it will delay the procedure of finding a better replacement for him. There are some names like Rishabh Pant are in the line-ups to display the legendary wicket-keeper batsman. Considering the next World Cup, the replacement needs enough time to settle and gain some experience before the big stage.

Team India regularly make a mistake nowadays as they fail to give enough opportunities for a player to settle at a position in a place in the team. If MS Dhoni stays there that will make the case even worse. After the exit of MS Dhoni, India should not make this common mistake with the replacement of MS Dhoni in the team.

So with the team perspectives, It will be a right decision from MS Dhoni to make a call on his career in the ODI format which will allow the team to make a long preparation for the next big event in the format. India are in a need of a long term planning like what England did in the last four years if India want to lift the next World Cup.

When looking at the player’s point of view, it is always hard to predict what MS Dhoni will think. He has done everything to the team and stays as a legend now. He will be always a special player without no doubts. But for the team’s sake, it will be good enough from MS Dhoni’s side to make a call rather being dropped from the team and facing unpleasant things at the end of a glorious cricket career which can not be replaced.
