Ish Sodhi in IPL as team liaison
New Zealand leg-spinner Ish Sodhi has been called in to Rajasthan Royals as team liaison officer for IPL 2021.
Sodhi, who is a regular customer for New Zealand in limited-overs cricket, went unsold for this year’s IPL. Now, he will be joining Kumar Sangakkara, Royals’ director of cricket and chief operating officer Jake Lush McCrum, in the management team.
“The Royals are an innovative, dynamic franchise that plays an entertaining brand of cricket, and I am delighted to rejoin my IPL family to work across the board,” Sodhi said in a statement.
The 28-year-old was previously appointed as a spin consultant and operations executive for the franchise in 2020. However, he could not join the team due to clashes with New Zealand domestic season and birth of his first child.
“Last year I expressed my interest in exploring the management side of the franchise, and the Royals management team was very supportive, offering me a role to enable me to begin my off-field journey.
“I’m looking forward to supporting the coaches and the business operations of the team through which I’ll really develop my cricketing and management skills.”
Sodhi played for Rajasthan in 2018 and 2019, picking up nine wickets at an economy rate of 6.69 in eight matches.
RR will be led by Sanju Samson this season, as the squad includes the names for Chris Morris, Jos Buttler, David Miller, Mustafizur Rahman, Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer. Morris was bought at all-time record 16.25 crore Indian rupees in the auction this month.
