Ishant likely to miss second Test against New Zealand
India have suffered a big blow just one day prior to their second Test against New Zealand in Christchurch, as pace bowler Ishant Sharma is likely to miss the match because of a recurrence of his right ankle injury that he picked up on January 20, during a Ranji Trophy match in Delhi.
It has been learnt that the veteran seamer is likely to be replaced by Umesh Yadav in the playing XI of India side on Saturday (February 29). India are already trailing the series 0-1 after suffering a humiliating 10-wicket defeat in the series opener in Wellington.
Ishant, coming from a long injury lay-off, was in fine form, and turned out to be the pick of the Indian bowlers in the Wellington Test, accumulating a five-wicket haul in New Zealand’s first innings.
The 31-year-old was present in the nets and bowled for a while on Thursday, but he was absent from training on Friday.
Sources revealed that Ishant had informed the team management of pain in the same ankle after bowling for nearly 20 minutes in the nets on Thursday. He was sent for tests on Friday, results for which are still awaited.
Ishant, who played his 97th Test in Wellington, is just three wickets shy of achieving his 300th Test wicket. But with the current circumstances, the milestone seems to be miles away.
Umesh, who is being considered as Ishant’s possible replacement, has never played a Test match in New Zealand. In fact his last Test match away from home came in December 2018, when he faced Australia at the Perth Stadium.
