Ishant reveals reason behind mocking Smith
Ishant Sharma mocked Steve Smith in the Border-Gavaskar series against Australia in 2017 at home. His facial expression to Smith was very popular at that time. Ishant then said Smith was praising his bowling. That’s why he mocked Smith. But he gave another reason.
In the first match of the series, Australia won by a big margin in Pune. India turned around in the second match. Won by 75 runs. India needed to get the wicket of Smith to win that low scoring match. So Ishant though he didn’t let Smith be confident, that’s why he mocked him.
“It was a very close match. Bhavnaaon mein behke aadmi kuch bhi karta hai (People do all sorts of things when driven by emotions),” Ishant Sharma said in a live chat with Indian opener Mayank Agarwal.
“We had lost the Pune Test, and the series was on the line. The wicket on Bengaluru had its ups-and-downs. You try your best to upset the batsman. He was playing, and doing all sorts of things. I tried my best to upset him. I knew if I could get his wicket, we can win the match. So, I was trying to get him out of his comfort zone. I knew if he became comfortable, he could win the match,”
He said Indian captain Virat Kohli is a very aggressive captain. He is happy when his bowlers can put pressure on the opponent. According to him, Virat always says to his teammates, do whatever you want. But don’t do anything that can get you banned.
Ishant Sharma also mentioned one of his funny bets with KL Rahul. He made fifty in the Test against the West Indies in Kingston in 2019. Ishant came down to play with KL Rahul’s gloves. While batting, Rahul told the Indian fast bowler that if he could hit 100, he would jump from the balcony.
