Jayawickrama breaks into top 50 in ICC Test rankings

Praveen Jayawickrama’s 11 for 178 on his debut Test against Bangladesh recently has earned him the place in latest ICC Test bowlers’ rankings at No. 48.

Jayawickrama was instrumental in Sri Lanka’s recent two-match Test series win by 1-0 against the Tigers. They won the last Test by 209 runs. The 22-year old made a fairytale debut with 11 wickets- only the 4th bowler to take 10 wicket haul on debut since 1980, first Sri Lankan to do so and since 2008 the only bowler to do so on debut.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne has also moved up four slots in the rankings to 11th position. Karunaratne was adjusted man of the series against Bangladesh for his 428 runs in just 2 matches with an average of 142.66 smashing 2 centuries and 1 half-century.

As usual, Kane Williamson stands at the top of the rankings followed by Steven Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Joe Root and Virat Kohli in top five.

On the other hand, in the case of Bangladesh, Tamim Iqbal’s 280 runs in 2 matches at an average of 93.33 against Sri Lanka took him three places up to No. 27. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mominul Haque also climbed up a slot to 21st and 30th respectively.

Spinner Taijul Islam who took 5 wickets in the second innings against Sri Lanka in the last Test, also moved up in the rankings to 24th position.
