Kapil Dev wants Navdeep Saini in second ODI
India’s former World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev has an advice ahead of the second ODI between India and New Zealand on Saturday (February 8). The Indian legend said he would like to see youngster Navdeep Saini in the second ODI against the Black Caps.
“You need a wicket-taking option. It is important to get Saini in the side not because India have lost the first ODI but he deserves a place in the side because of his pace and wicket-taking abilities. Look at Bumrah, he forces New Zealand to play him watchfully because whenever batsmen try to attack these bowlers can get wickets,” he said.
Dev also added, “Team selection should be never be based on liking or disliking. It should be on what the team requires and which combination can you win you games.”
Saini can come into the playing XI of the second ODI, replacing the right-arm fast bowler Shardul Thakur. Thakur was the least economical bowler in the first ODI, and one of the bowlers to blame for India’s loss despite posting a mammoth 347 on the board.
Thakur was hammered for 80 runs in his 9 overs, giving away runs at an economy of 8.89. With this, he became the first Indian bowler to concede 80 or more runs in an ODI against New Zealand in spite of not completing the 10-over quota.
From the beginning of his ODI career, Thakur has been quite expensive with the ball. So far he has represented the Men in Blue in 9 50-over matches, and of them, he bowled with an economy above 6 in 6 matches.
So Navdeep Saini’s inclusion in the playing XI in place of Thakur could bring about some changes for the visitors in the second game in Auckland. Saini has till date played for India in 3 matches, and picked up 5 wickets.
