Kapil explains how Shastri was retained
The latest development in Indian cricket team was Ravi Shastri’s reappointment as head coach. This news did not really please many Indian cricket fans as many thought there would be Virat Kohli’s preference involved in Shastri’s retainment as the chief coach for two more years.
However, Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) chief Kapil Dev clarified that Kohli’s interest for Shastri did not influence the final decision.
After the interview, Cricket Advisory Committee reappointed Ravi Shastri for a two-year period, a significant decision that was expected. His work rate will once again be up for review after the conclusion of the 2021 T20 World Cup in India.
“Not at all, because if we take his (Kohli’s) views we would have taken the entire team’s views too. We haven’t asked anyone. There was no scope for that,” said Kapil when enquired if the skipper’s preference influenced the final decision in selecting the head coach.
However, among all the top candidates, Ravi Shastri’s record was cut above the rest of the contenders because under his guidance, Indian team reached the No.1 ranking in Test matches and also clinched a Test series in Australia for the first time in 71 years.
On the other side of the coin, India twice lost in the World Cup semi-finals both in (2015 and 2019) with him in charge but that didn’t seem to have taken a toll in his future.
When asked about India’s semifinal exits in ICC competitions, Kapil Dev said, “If any manager doesn’t win (a World Cup) with any team, they should be sacked? No, you look at the overall picture and we are not looking at that, we are looking at what presentation he has given, we have gone by that.”
According to Kapil Dev, Shastri’s communication skills may have played a big part in the selection process.
“All of them were excellent. Sometimes I felt Shastri had more skills in communication, they may have felt differently but we didn’t discuss that, we have given the marks after listening to their presentations.
Shastri’s terrific track record with the Indian team and his camaraderie with the Indian players has been great and it was more than enough for him to retain the job. Before jetting off to West Indies, India captain Virat Kohli had said: “With Ravi bhai, all of us have a great camaraderie. Everyone in the team shares mutual respect and we have done well together as a group. We will be very happy if he is continuing as the coach,” Kohli had said.
